New Horizons’ Young Person’s Support Project

Exciting News from New Horizons.....

New Horizons’ Young Person’s Support Project

The New Horizons mental health charity has received a vital funding boost from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales for a young peoples’ project.

The Rhondda Cynon Taff (RCT) based charity, has been awarded a grant of just over £7,000 for a pilot project to support young people living with mental health issues in the area.

New Horizons manages a range of resource and outreach centres throughout Rhondda Cynon Taff for people experiencing mental health or emotional wellbeing issues, and projects the positive image of people suffering mental health problems through challenging discrimination by means of education, outreach work, information and support services.

The grant will enable New Horizons to offer a six month pilot project from January-June 2013 at the Resource Centre in Aberdare to support young people (aged 18-25) who are living with mental health issues in RCT. The pilot project will offer 1:1 support using the Recovery Model, access to information, advice, counselling and training (including a Depression Busting course) and access to the internet cafe.

Gill Malpas, Chair of New Horizons, says: “New Horizons is really pleased to have received the funding from Lloyds TSB to develop this new service for young people which I know is desperately needed in this area”.

Mike Lewis, Grant Manager for Wales at the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales, said, “New Horizons is a positive and well run charity helping disadvantaged young people across the Rhondda Cynon Taff area. The Foundation’s focus is on supporting charities that are able to help people play fuller roles in their communities and New Horizons does just that.”

If you are a youth organisation and are interested in working in partnership please contact the centre on 01685 881113 or download a referral from our website - www.newhorizons-mentalhealth.co.uk

Changes ahead for New Horizons services

Please note that New Horizons resource centres will be temporarily closed from April 1st – 15th April to prepare for these changes.

New Horizons is proud to announce key changes in service delivery and accommodation in Aberdare, Spring 2012.

Accommodation in Aberdare During spring 2012 the New Horizons’ Aberdare project and offices (currently based in Cardiff Street, Aberdare) will be moving to an alternative venue in Aberdare town centre. We have been based in Cardiff Street since 2007 however in these times of austerity we need to consider what is ‘best value’ for money and what will give us financial stability, in the longer term, as a charity. As a result we will be downsizing but more importantly remaining within Aberdare town centre. We are hoping to continue providing a range of services from our new base but the size may limit what will be on offer. The staff and trustees will keep everyone informed of progress with this move as and when available.

New service delivery
As from April 2012 there will be important changes to our services. New Horizons will be offering its service users an opportunity to develop their own Recovery Plan with appropriate support. The Recovery Plan will help our members to monitor their progress, target areas for development and to maintain an active control of their lives. It will also aid us to monitor our progress and to keep us at the cusp of excellence in providing quality support for our members. The Plan will also include details of what services our members can expect from New Horizons.

Pancake Day, is the 21st February

Pancakes for supper

Don't forget Pancake Day, is the  21st February

Making pancakes is quick and easy, make sure you make plenty, they are always very popular.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8oz/230g all purpose/plain flour
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2½ cups/600ml milk
  • 2 tsp melted butter plus melted butter for cooking

Preparation:

Makes 12 pancakes

  • Sieve the flour into a large baking bowl, add the salt. Make a well in the center of the flour and add the eggs and beat well until smooth and lump free.
  • Add half the milk and the 2 tsp of butter, beat well. Add the remaining milk and stir.
  • Leave the batter to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Lightly grease a pancake pan or frying pan with a little melted butter, heat until very hot and add a ladle of batter to evenly and thinly coat the base of the pan. Cook until set and lightly golden. Flip over (if you are really brave try tossing the pancake in the air, great fun) and cook on the other side for approx 30 seconds.
  • Remove the pancake from the pan, place on a sheet of kitchen paper and keep warm. Continue as above until all the batter is used up.

To Serve

On Pancake Day, pancakes are traditionally eaten sprinkled with sugar and a squeeze of lemon. However, serve as you like with jam, Golden Syrup, honey, choclate spread; whatever takes your fancy.
